Behind the #PBCHOOPSTOP5 12/10/17 and Week 3 preview
#pbchoops Top 5 Week ending 12/10/17
3. Lake Worth
Quite a few changes in the top 5 already in the first 2 weeks. Injuries and unexpected coaching changes have been a major story thus far this year as teams with high expectations coming into the season are having to adjust to playing without key pieces. That being said teams are still going out every week and facing some of the best competition in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
#1 Wellington - Wellington stays in the top spot with two double digit wins last week. As with past years the Wolverines rarely have issues with conference and district foes. Although this season might be different with emergence of cross town rival Palm Beach Central. They are undefeated as well and will be a team to reckon with when the two meet up in January.
#2 Dwyer - The Panthers have had a strong two weeks going down to Broward on back to back weekends, coming out with victories over quality opponents. This week they face Martin County and Royal Palm. Dwyer is playing really well right now and we don't look for that to change.
#3 Lake Worth - Lake Worth scored two big district wins over rivals Atlantic and Santaluces last week to stay strong at #3. The Trojans are being led by the trio of Avery Brookes, Jay Medor and Marques Spann. They look to get a strangle hold on the district this week when they travel to Boca to face the Bobcats.
#4 Suncoast - The Chargers continue to impress, yet by all accounts they haven't played a complete game, each night another player stepping up. Last week it was junior guard Torrin Andrews and freshman big man Makye Boles that had big games in two wins over Newman and Port St Lucie. This week their ranking will be tested when they match-up with rival Palm Beach Lakes.
#5 Benjamin - Benjamin crashed the top 5 with a huge win over Oxbridge Friday night. The Buccaneers are undefeated and are getting MVP type numbers from junior wing Ben Lubarsky along with Louisville football QB commit Jordan Travis and Kaiir Elam. Benjamin has their sights set on a district title, feeling they can compete with both Westminster Academy and Sagemont out of Broward county to get it done.
Several teams are banging on the door to get into the top 5, most notably Palm Beach Central, Forest Hill and Palm Beach Lakes. Central and Forest Hill are both undefeated while Lakes has bounced back strong from an 0-2 start. As more games get played strength of schedule will become more of a factor when the #PBCHOOPS Power Rankings take effect in the new year, rewarding teams who perform well against the best competition.
Week 3 Preview
We are getting close to the Christmas holiday along with exam week approaching for the student-athletes. Schedules will be normal this week but expect fewer games beginning next week and pick back up after Christmas with various tournaments going on all through out the break. Here are the top match-ups for week 3:
Tuesday December 11, 2017
#3 Lake Worth vs Boca Raton
Expect a great game of two evenly matched teams with high level talent on both sides. Cade Long and Max Demius have been on a tear to start the season, Lake Worth will look to slow the Bobcat duo down in this district battle.
#2 Dwyer vs Martin County
Martin County is always stacked with talent and should provide a test for a Panther team that is rolling right now. This will be just another solid team for a Dwyer squad that has already defeated several tough opponents thus far.
Thursday December 14, 2017
Inlet Grove vs #3 Lake Worth
Inlet Grove has gone toe to toe with Palm Beach County's best so far this year, coming up just short against Oxbridge and Wellington. They take another shot against the Trojans in Lake Worth Thursday night.
Friday December 15, 2017
Spanish River vs #3 Lake Worth
River beat Lake Worth twice last season and coming off a big win against Boca. Lake Worth is taking on all comers, an undefeated week will play heavily in the strength of schedule department.
Palm Beach Lakes vs #4 Suncoast
Big time rivalry game with quality talent. This will be a game to watch with several play makers on the floor.
Saturday December 16, 2017
Cardinal Newman vs Palm Beach Lakes
Not much was expected from Newman this year, they are 0-3 to start the season, yet have hung tough against their three opponents Suncoast, Inlet Grove and Jupiter. The Crusaders will need to step up once again as they travel down the road to Lakes to face a Rams team just starting to hit it's stride.
John I Leonard vs Santaluces
Records don't matter in this rivalry game, the Lancers and Chiefs always come to play when they face each other. Don't expect anything different Saturday. The Lancers will need to watch out for sophomore sharp shooter Chance Dixon who has been lighting it up from 3-point range early this year.
The Kreul is here and once again #PBCHOOPS teams are representing in this great event. Games begin Friday at various venues throughout Broward county. Here are the 1st game schedules for local teams:
Atlantic vs. Heritage School (Newnan, GA)
Coral Springs vs. Boca Raton
Oxbridge Academy vs. LeFlore (Mobile, AL)
